Example Turns - Game 1
|
Turn 1
|
As my empire is quite small to begin with, I needed to expand quickly before my neighbours take
the lands nearby. Squares 35,37 and 34,37 (the two squares beneath the lowest square in my
empire) look to be quite prosperous, but 34,37 has a large power ring so currently I’ll divert
my attacks to 35,37. In square 35,35, I grouped my all of the land units by clicking on the Land
button in the toolbar. I then moved this task force south-east one square, into another square
under my control. I then made an even bigger task force by grouping the current one with the
land units in this square, so it now contains 6 land units. There is one land unit left up
north, I’m using this as a garrison, so I sentried it by pressing S. I left all the boats in
their respective ports for the moment. The large task force doesn’t have enough movement to
reach its destination square, so I pressed Space to hold the unit, this turn is now complete,
so I clicked on the 1-turn button to complete the turn.

Turn 2
|
There were no messages so my attack can be carried out. I moved my task force south-east again,
into square 35,37, as well as providing support for the task force by also moving all of my
naval units into this square. This turn is now complete.

Turn 3
|
In the messages box, it was reported that the odds of my units winning the battle was 1.7:1, but
as my minimum attack odds are 1.9:1, they did not launch an assault. I changed this by pressing
9 in the map window until the odds reached 1.5:1, this should be enough. I left everything where
they were and ended the turn.
|
Turn 4
|
Success! I have taken the square, but one of the naval units has been lost, and the other
slightly damaged. I broke up the task force into their individual units by pressing 0, I moved
two land units north-west one square and sentried them there, and then grouped the remaining
units in 35,37 into a combined task force by pressing C, so it contains 4 land units and 1 naval
unit in support. This unit will hopefully hold off any incursions until new units will be
produced, so that it can start to take other nearby squares.

At the start you want to look for new squares to take over that are a good buy. This means a
relatively large population with relatively small defences. So look for a square with a power
ring that is not much bigger than the owner indicator. Another thing to keep in mind is that
the power rings don't have the current defender 50% advantage shown in them. So to get decent
odds, you really need a power ring twice as big as the place you are attacking, or larger.

Turn 1
|
First, I'm going to form up my units into TFs for easy movement. There is an attractive target
to the South. It's one of those represented by Paul's early village tile. They are supposed to
be river tiles, which is why they have higher population, but we don't have river graphics set
up yet. On the first turn I form each square into a combined TF using the C. button on the
Toolbar as soon as that square comes up for movement. Then I moved all the individual TFs to
my southern-most point with the arrow keys. At this point I formed them all into a single big
TF, and pushed the 1-turn button (there wasn't enough movement left to move into the target
square).

Turn 2
|
I moved in, with a Thud! I was lucky and took it without major casualties. The culture didn't
even declare war (its random). The other high-population square is too big in military power
for me to take on now. Since we aren't at war, I will shift my attentions to the weak guys to
the North. First, I will leave a garrison on sentry here. I dissolve the big TF by hitting the
zero key (big TF was already showing in unit box) then I moved out all but one ship and two
infantry. I formed these into an amphibious TF, and hit the s key to set that TF on sentry
duty. (To remove a TF from sentry duty, right-click on its square; if its the only TF it will
be automatically activated, if its still a sentry, right-click on that TF in the unit box to
make it active) All the single units I moved to the North were then formed into a big combined
TF.
